Light Blue Ash Carved Vase

This one-of-a-kind piece by Hamilton demonstrates an inventive assembly process and strong textural expression. The lower body was initially thrown as a deep, narrow bowl. After firming overnight, a textured slab was applied across the bowl’s opening to form the sharply defined shoulder. Once the slab was set, a circular hole was cut at the center and a thick coil of soft clay was applied around the rim. The coil was then thrown upward to form the neck of the vase. Twisted handles at the shoulder add further visual interest and handmade character.

The surface is marked by dynamic diagonal carving, brought to life by a soft, layered Light Blue Ash glaze. This glaze pools in the carved lines and transitions across subtle earth tones beneath, highlighting the tactile quality of the form.
