Holbein Mug XXXIII: The Old Man

Block 33 of Hans Holbein’s Danse Macabre portrays The Old Man. Stooped and weary, he is gently led away by Death, who plays a stringed instrument as if to soothe the inevitable journey. This woodcut evokes resignation rather than fear—an old soul nearing the end with a quiet grace.

Created between 1523 and 1525, Holbein’s Danse Macabre reinterprets the medieval Dance of Death with Renaissance clarity and satire. Each image reminds viewers that no one—young or old, rich or poor—is exempt from mortality. With detailed linework and biting wit, Holbein invites us to reflect on the fleeting nature of life.

Each mug is handcrafted in our Morganton, NC studio and features a high-fired porcelain body with a decal image from Holbein’s historic print series. A striking piece for lovers of dark humor, art history, and memento mori.
