Maria Avila
Maria Avila is a first-generation Mexican-American ceramic artist who discovered clay by accident while studying painting at Western Piedmont Community College. Her work bridges tradition and personal expression, featuring bold imagery from her Mexican heritage: monarch butterflies, cacti, and religious symbols. She combines these cultural elements with politically charged text, using vibrant colors and color theory to create functional pieces that carry stories and subtle commentary into daily life, believing ceramics offer unique intimacy between artist and audience.
